Perhaps you’re snacking on a banana, sipping some coffee or sitting in front of your computer and taking a break from work to read this article. Most likely, those goods – as well as your smartphone, refrigerator and virtually every other object in your home – were once loaded onto a large container in another country and traveled thousands of miles via ships crossing the ocean before ultimately arriving at your doorstep.
Today, an estimated 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea, with 60% of that – including virtually all your imported fruits, gadgets and appliances – packed in large steel containers. The rest is mainly commodities like oil or grains that are poured directly into the hull. In total, about US$14 trillion of the world’s goods spend some time inside a big metal box.
The Ashland Alliance named The Edge Business Center its April Business of the Month.Â
Located in Russell, The Edge is a two-floor building situated on âthe edgeâ of Boyd and Greenup counties, serving both countiesâ residents.
The former Ashland Oil building features more than 100,000 square feet. The Patterson family purchased it in 2018 to repurpose and redesign it to attract businesses.
An open house is scheduled for April 28 at The Edge. The new small business block will be unveiled then. The block is home to 21 planned office spaces ranging in size from 200-1,100 square feet, according to Ashland Alliance.Â
âWe are a family of businesspeople who are always on the lookout for potential business opportunities,â said Kristie Patterson, The Edgeâs executive director. âIt was as though the vacant building sitting on top of the hill above Hobby Lobby was calling our name.â
NAMPA, Idaho â Idaho lawmakers have introduced a bill that would fully fund all-day kindergarten programs in the state.
The state only funds half-day kindergarten programs, the Idaho Press reported Friday. As a result, school districts must pool together money from their general funds and other sources to pay for a full-day kindergarten program.
Some districts, such as Boise and West Ada, charge tuition to parents. The state Department of Education said 88 out of the stateâs 115 school districts and 34 of its 67 charter schools offer at least some full-day kindergarten option.
Republican state Sen. Carl Crabtree and Republican state Rep. Judy Boyle introduced a bill on March 11 to fund full-day kindergarten at an annual cost of up to $42.1 million.
